Stored Products Pest Control

✅ Fleas, beetles, and moths are among the most common stored product pests including bean weevils, rice weevils, cigarette beetles, yellow mealworms, grain moths, and Indian meal moths.

✅ Grain mites are also considered a stored product pests. Adult insects are generally small, ranging from minuscule, barely perceptible grain mites to beetles approximately 1/16″ to 1/8″ in length, and up to approximately one inch for moths.

✅ They predominantly vary in shades of red, brown, or black as adults, but are lighter in color during the larva stage. Identification of stored product pests commonly occurs when mature insects begin to travel from their food source into other areas of the residence.

✅ Stored product pests may be introduced during the various production or packaging stages of crops.

✅ Fleas, beetles, and moths from newly-arrived infested food packages may spread to other stored products located in close proximity, such as in a kitchen or store room.

✅ Stored products that are not kept in tightly sealed and durable containers are open to potential infestation.

✅ Some stored product pests have the ability to penetrate inorganic materials, such as plastic and soft metals.

✅ Stored product pests are known to destroy large quantities of plant products meant for human consumption.

✅ An infestation of stored product pests in a residence will cause similar food spoilage on a more localized scale.

✅ As they go through their life cycle, these insects leave droppings and other filth in the food further rendering them inedible. In addition, mold will sometimes grow on food with insect activity.

✅ Some stored product pests also feed on and damage household items, not just plant-based products.

✅ Generally, stored product pests pose a low health risk. There are not likely to transmit diseases to humans and ingesting small amounts of these insects in food is not considered hazardous.

✅ Insect activity may lead to mold growth resulting in an increased risk to human health.

✅ Food infested with grain mites may produce allergic reactions in some people.

✅ Stored product pests are predominantly found in areas containing stored food such as kitchen or storeroom, where grains, beans, tobacco, spices, and other similar products are stored.

✅ Stored product pests are also known to consume flour, starchy food, dried fruit, and meat.

✅ Adult insects may be found migrating across floors, walls, and other surfaces in search of another food source.

✅ A stored product pest infestation will lead to food spoilage. Over time, these insects may migrate and cause damage to food products in other places, creating a greater area of infestation.

✅ Stored product pests are also associated with mold growth and allergens that may be harmful to human health.
